JONES, B. H. Responses of single neurons in cat visual cortex to a simple and a more complex stimulus. Am. J. Physiol. 218(4): 1102-l 107. 1970.-The response of a single neuron to an oscillating light-dark edge in the visual field (simple stimulus) was compared to the response when a second edge was added at a variety of distances from the first (complex stimulus). It was found that the second edge often influenced the response to the first from positions beyond the apparent receptive field limits. Response to one edge could be augmented or diminished by the addition of a second edge, but the response to the more complex pattern was not predictable from the response characteristics for the simple pattern.

Stimulus-dependent oscillations in the cat visual cortex: differences between bar and grating stimuli.
We have investigated the dependence of cortical oscillations on the type of visual stimulus. Single unit recordings were performed in areas 17 and 18 of the cat visual cortex. Among 217 cortical neurons oscillations in the frequency range of 22-102 Hz were found in 29 cells (13%). The proportion of oscillating cells was higher (16%) if both bar and grating stimuli were used to stimulate cortica...
متن کاملThe effect of ibotonic acid lesion of the nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM) on the response of cortical neurons in the rat barrel cortex
In the present study, the effect of NBM lesion on the temporal characteristics of response integration evoked by multiple whisker stimulations in the barrel cortex of rats was studied. Nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM) projects to widespread areas of the cortex and provides the major cholinergic input (80%) to the cerebral cortex. In this study we examined the effects of NBM lesion on the respon...
متن کاملAction of brain-derived neurotrophic factor on function and morphology of visual cortical neurons
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is known to play a role in experience-dependent plasticity of the developing visual cortex. For example, BDNF acutely enhances long-term potentiation and blocks long-term depression in the visual cortex of young rats. Such acute actions of BDNF suggested to be mediated mainly through presynaptic mechanisms. A chronic application of BDNF to the visual cor...

متن کاملComputational subunits of visual cortical neurons revealed by artificial neural networks.
A crucial step toward understanding visual processing is to obtain a comprehensive description of the relationship between visual stimuli and neuronal responses. Many neurons in the visual cortex exhibit nonlinear responses, making it difficult to characterize their stimulus-response relationships. Here, we recorded the responses of primary visual cortical neurons of the cat to spatiotemporal r...
